Anti Convulsants.
Anti convulsants are a class of drugs that are traditionally used to treat convulsions or seizures, however they are also increasingly being given to treat mood disorders and neuropathic pain.
Neuropathic pain is caused when the nerves donīt function properly and send messages of pain to the brain, which are often described as aching, burning, shooting or stabbing. There are many causes of neuropathic pain, such as underlying medical problems like multiple sclerosis, alcoholism, cancer or HIV infection.
Neurontin is an anti convulsant that, as well as treating seizures associated with epilepsy, may also be used to treat pain due to neuropathic pain and nerve pain associated with herpes zoster infections.
Seizures are caused by abnormal electrical activity in the brain and can have a number of causes, including head injuries or certain diseases. Recurring seizures are due to epilepsy, which is a condition that usually starts in childhood and for most there is no known cause. Bursts of excess activity in the brain result in the brainīs messages becoming mixed up, which causes the repeated seizures. There are many different types of seizures but they are usually treated with medication, which helps stop or decrease the amount a person has.
Anti convulsants work by suppressing neurons that fire rapidly and excessively. The medication can also prevent a seizure spreading within the brain, protecting against effects that can lead to brain damage. Although all medication contains side effects, seizure medication has many, so the side effects of anti convulsants need to be weighed against the symptoms.
Topamax is used with other medicines to control certain types of seizures. The medication is believed to work by curing the overactive neurons in the brain that can lead to a seizure or a migraine, which is how most seizure medicines work. Brain cells can also fire at high rates during some normal activities, such as maintaining balance in exercise and focusing eyes when reading. Activities such as these become less precise and slower with seizure medicines, which is why it is important to balance seizures and side effects.
Anti convulsant drugs donīt always need to be taken forever and can be tapered when a person hasnīt had a seizure for a certain amount of time. However, the seizures may return when medication is stopped and the drugs are usually continued if an underlying problem such as stroke, tumour or birth defect is present.
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
Find out if the medications you're taking are available in a generic form or a less expensive brand-name drug (you can also look this up online at sites such as destinationrx.com). About 75 percent of all premium drugs on the market today have a lower-cost alternative. Switching could save you between 20 and 90 percent. Many chains such as Walmart, Target, Costco, Kmart, CVS, Walgreens and Kroger sell hundreds of generics for as little as $4 for a 30-day supply and $10 for a 90-day supply.
Another cost cutter is to buy your medications in bulk. Many pharmacies give discounts if you buy a three-month supply of drugs versus a 30-day supply. Also, find out if the pills you're taking can be cut in half. Pill splitting allows you to get two months worth of medicine for the price of one.
